Water damage
Water damage repair and rebuild
Water damage repair — often called rebuild or reconstruction — replaces the drywall, insulation, baseboards, flooring, cabinets and paint removed during mitigation, once the structure is confirmed dry. Repairs should never start before drying is verified.
- Typical time
- One to three weeks for most homes after drying is confirmed.
- Repair or replace
- Removed drywall, trim, flooring and cabinet parts are replaced and matched to the rest of the home.
Restoration has two halves: mitigation (stopping, extracting and drying) and rebuild (putting the house back). Some restoration companies do both; others hand off rebuild to a general contractor.
Matching matters. Drywall texture, paint sheen, flooring runs and cabinet finishes all need to blend with what wasn't damaged, which is why flooring often has to be replaced beyond the wet area to get a continuous run.

Water Damage Repair & Rebuild: common questions
Can repairs start as soon as the water is removed?
No. Closing up walls or laying new flooring over wet materials traps moisture and invites mold. Repairs start after readings confirm the structure is dry.
Why does undamaged flooring sometimes get replaced too?
Flooring often can't be patched invisibly, especially tile, laminate and hardwood. To get a continuous match, adjoining areas may need to be replaced.
